Lawrence Livermore's mission is to apply science and technology in the national interest, with a focus on global security, global ecology, and bioscience. Laboratory employees are working with industrial and academic partners to increase national economic competitiveness and improve science education. The Laboratory's mission is dynamic and has changed over the years to meet new national needs.

CORD is a national nonprofit organization providing innovative changes in education to prepare students for greater success in careers and higher education. CORD's initiatives include curriculum design, developing new learning tools, delivering professional development, creating applications of educational technology, and conducting educational research and evaluation.

CORD developed the National Photonics Skill Standard for Technicians that forms the basis of the Merced College curriculum effort.

The mission of the National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies is to lead education, business, and government in developing the skilled Information Technology (IT) workforce for the new economy. To fulfill this mission, the NWCET follows four primary goals.

Goal 1. Establish Model Partnerships linking business, education and government to advance Information Technology Education.
Goal 2. Design and promote pathways, products, and services that increase student diversity and improve opportunities in Information Technology programs.
Goal 3. Create Information Technology curriculum, courseware and professional development products and services.
Goal 4. Provide national leadership by contributing to the development of public policy and through the dissemination of "Best Practices" in IT education.

Expected to open in 2004 as UC's tenth campus, UC Merced will be the first American research university built in the 21st century. The campus will use digital technology to create an educational network serving students and communities throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Students are already enrolled in courses in the Valley at sites such as the UC Center in Fresno. UC Merced will have an integral role in improving the educational attainment of Valley students and in fostering the economic development of Central California.
