Political Science

The Merced College Department of Political Science is designed to help introduce students in developing knowledge, analytical skills and critical insights into the nature of politics, political problems, political systems and power relationships in the United States and around the world. The goal of the department is to prepare students for active engagement in political life, whether as informed citizens or in preparation for further study at the upper division level. The department seeks to acquaint students with the dynamics of the political system, functions of government and various institutions which impact political decision- making and the polity. The study of political science prepares students for many fields, including law, journalism, social work, government service, business and teaching.
