Black & African American Students

At Merced College, we celebrate the brilliance, resilience, and cultural heritage of our Black and African American students. This space is designed to affirm your identity, foster community, and connect you with the resources and support to thrive, both academically and personally. Through culturally responsive programs, dedicated services, and student-centered initiatives—including Umoja, the Black Student Union (BSU), and A2MEND—we are committed to amplifying your voice, honoring your experiences, and supporting your journey every step of the way. Together, we rise—rooted in strength, grounded in purpose. Welcome home.

Umoja
Umoja, (a Kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other students. We believe that when the voices and histories of students are deliberately and intentionally recognized, the opportunity for self-efficacy emerges and a foundation is formed for academic success. Umoja actively serves and promotes student success for all students through a curriculum and pedagogy responsive to the legacy of the African and African American Diasporas.
-
A2MEND
The African American Male Educational Network and Development (A2 MEND) organization is comprised of African American male educators who utilize scholarly and professional expertise to foster institutional change within the community college system with a focus on the success of African American male students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
