Merced College English Language Institute (MCELI)

Merced College English Language Institute (MCELI) is located on the Merced College campus in Merced, California. It is a not-for-credit, intensive English program designed to help students improve their English proficiency, prepare for college-level coursework, and experience American culture through engaging classroom instruction and exciting field trips to destinations such as Yosemite National Park, the beach, and other local attractions.

Curriculum

Through individualized testing, placement, advising, and dynamic instruction, the dedicated instructors at the Merced College English Language Institute (MCELI) work together to help students enhance their English language proficiency and communication skills.

The MCELI curriculum focuses on the key components of English learning — Listening & Speaking, Grammar, Reading & Vocabulary, and Writing Skills. Each term lasts 15 weeks, with new sessions typically beginning in January, May, and August. Customized short-term or group study programs can also be arranged to meet specific needs.

Students receive 18 hours per week of intensive classroom instruction designed to strengthen overall English ability and improve TOEFL scores. Courses include Oral Communication, Pronunciation, Comprehension, Reading, Writing, and Language Structure. Weekly assignments and feedback from instructors help students make steady progress toward their academic goals.

MCELI’s teaching methods emphasize the skills necessary for success in college-level courses. Lessons are carefully structured to create a smooth transition from pre-college English study to college academics. Small class sizes allow for personalized attention, active participation, and one-on-one support from instructors who are passionate about student success.
