Applications are now open for Promise Housing, a new affordable student housing community on the UC Merced campus that will welcome its first residents in January 2027.

The more than $108 million project, a partnership between UC Merced and Merced College funded through the State of California’s student housing program, will provide 488 beds, with 296 reserved for UC Merced students and 192 for Merced College students.

“We are thrilled about this innovative project nearing completion and to welcome Merced College students to the UC Merced campus,” said Tonantzin Oseguera, UC Merced’s Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Engagement. “Promise Housing is more than a place to live — it’s an opportunity to bring our two campuses closer together and create a more seamless path for students as they continue their educational journeys.”

Located on Bellevue Road near UC Merced’s existing residence halls, Promise Housing will offer fully furnished suites and apartments with affordable monthly rates and access to campus resources and activities.

For Merced College students, housing rates range from approximately $824 to $849 per month, depending on room type, with utilities and internet included. Additional costs include a required meal plan and student services fee.

Promise Housing: How to Apply

Be the first to live in Promise Housing! Join our community and live directly on UC Merced’s campus.

Residents will have access to UC Merced campus activities, student organizations and recreational opportunities, along with residential support services and free transportation between the two campuses.

Although the project is designed to strengthen transfer pathways between the institutions, Merced College students are not required to transfer to UC Merced to qualify for housing.

“This is an exciting opportunity for our students to enjoy the full experience of living on a university campus while continuing their education at Merced College,” said Mike McCandless, Vice President of Student Services at Merced College. “We want students to feel supported, connected and confident about their futures, and Promise Housing will give them another place to build those connections and pursue their goals.”

Merced College students are scheduled to move in on Jan. 7, 2027, followed by UC Merced students on Jan. 14. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is tentatively planned for Jan. 27.
