On the Fourth of July in 1980, in the middle of a presidential campaign and beneath the cloud of the Iran hostage crisis, politics were put to the side—mostly—on a historic day in Merced.

In his distinguished 14-year tenure as president of Merced College, Ben Duran led the construction of many of the college’s current buildings, creating much-needed space during a time of significant growth in student interest and enrollment.

The 11th annual Merced Sunrise Rotary Field of Honor—a display of American flags honoring the selfless work of veterans, active military and first responders—will be installed on the Merced College front lawn from Nov. 4-11.

A pair of historic commencement ceremonies were held at Merced College last week to honor the Class of 2023, with hundreds of students crossing the stage in Merced and Los Banos.

Patrick Wollett graduated from Merced College on Thursday, May 18. He heard his name called, heard the cheers from his family and instructors, received congratulatory handshakes from dignitaries, and celebrated afterward with his classmates and loved ones.
