Other Options for Transferring in California

In addition to the public universities, California is home to a higher education segment that is not funded by the government, but rather by tuition paid by students and private donations. These are the independent colleges and universities of California, many of whom belong to the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities (AICCU). Independent schools vary widely in size and mission. You can use the following links to find out more about the independent segment of California higher education and how to prepare for transfer to one of these institutions. In addition, you can see course transfer information about those AICCU members with which Merced College has formal articulation agreements.

Note: You can apply the methods described in the guide for exploring out-of-state institutions to get the information you need to prepare for transfer to independent schools for which articulation information is not available.

It is not unusual for students to attend more than one California Community College (CCC) on their way to a university. Fortunately, there are information resources available for you to determine whether coursework at another CCC will transfer to a university. Merced College also has written articulation agreements with a few other CCCs to help students enter some health sciences programs.

Information about which courses at any CCC are transferable to the California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) is available at the ASSIST Web site. There you can also find out which courses at each CCC meet CSU and UC system-wide general education requirements. Lastly, you can learn which CCC courses meet the major preparation requirements at the various CSU and UC campuses. Information about agreements that Merced College has reached with other CCCs that allow students to meet requirements for some health sciences programs (nursing, dental hygiene, and others) is available in a set of articulation agreements.

Students from Merced Community College transfer to universities and colleges all over the country and beyond. Since there is little or no formal articulation with institutions outside of California, preparing to transfer will require additional effort to gather the necessary information. MC counselors can assist you with that effort. The following links provide you with a guide to help you understand what kind of information you need and where to find it. In addition, you can see course transfer information about those out-of-state schools with which MC has formal articulation agreements and learn about a tuition-savings agreement among western states in the U.S.
