Mary F. Adams

Major:                           Visual Arts

Interests:                       swimming, reading, club involvement

Future Goals:                Associate Degree in 2008

Nominating Instructor:  Christine Plecnik, Science/Math/Engineering

Mary Adams has been described as an unique "nontraditional" student by her nominating instructor Dr. Christine Plecnik.  Mary is 58 years young and is a single mother of three sons.  Mary became a student at Merced College after her sons persistently urged her to get out of the house.  She is earning her Associate Degree in Visual Arts.   Mary's college experience hasn't been the easiest, she has experienced medical problems which makes her vision impaired.  This disability has not stopped her from becoming an active member and officer of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and  the Art Club and is currently the Chairperson of the School Site Council and East Campus Education Center. Mary has numerous achievements according to Professor Plecnik including participation in various fundraisers such as Locks of Love, Relay for Life, Get Out the Vote, Project Christmas and a book drive for the Hurricane Katrina disaster. She has attended the Phi Theta Kappa Regional Leadership Conference.

Mary's most rewarding courses have been ceramic and sculpture. She thoroughly enjoys creating works of art for herself and as gifts.  Mary's GPA is 3.55, she plans to graduate with her Associate of Arts Degree in Visual Arts this May.  She currently hasn't made long term career goals as she focuses on the present time and finishing up her coursework.  Mary believes her success at Merced College has been in the opportunities she has experienced as well as the friendships.  She acknowledges much of her support has come from EOPS Counselors and DSS Counselors.

Congratulations to Mary for being selected as the December Outstanding Student of  the Month. She received recognition at the Board of Trustees meeting as well as a check for $50 and a special parking space in December.
