Angelica Zaragoza  has been selected as the November Student of the Month.  She is recommended highly for her "exceptional qualities, including her intelligence, diligence, focus and steadfastness" notes Jan Salles, Business and Office Technology Instructor who nominated Angelica.  She has been attending Merced College since 1998 and not only carries 12 units to complete her degree this semester she also works 40 hours per week and has two children.  Angelica is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and has a current GPA of 3.72.

"Merced College has been a good starting point for me; I was a young mom with no job, but knew I wanted to do something constructive with my life."  Angelica acquired a work study job on campus and has been progressing toward her goals ever since.  She currently works in the Admissions and Records Department here at Merced College.  Jeff Tassey, Guidance Counselor has seen Angelica in her work environment and states how helpful and competent she is.  "She goes above and beyond to assist students."

Angelica's career goals include advancing her field of study in Office Administration and to be hired by a company so that she could one day be the Chief Administrator.  The road has not been easy for Angelica; she credits the financial aid office for giving her the opportunity to attend college.  She came from a single-parent household where education was not emphasized, but she knew she wanted to make a positive change.  Angelica states," for someone on an already tight budget, financial aid has been a crucial component in allowing me to accomplish my goals."  She will be the first in her family to graduate from college.

Angelica has two daughters and emphasizes that  "The most important thing to me is setting a good example for my children, I want them to understand how important education is and to realize that they can do anything they set their minds to, and it all begins with a solid educational background."

Congratulations to Angelica!  She receives a special parking pass for the month, a check for $50, and  a certificate presentation at the November Merced College Board of Trustees meeting.
