Merced College Student of the Month
Interests: Volunteering for her community or her son's clubs
Future Goals: Transfer to a four-year university
Nominating Instructor: Cary Yanagi
Ms. Jennifer Allen was selected as the outstanding student for the month of March 2004. Ms. Allen is in her sixth semester at Merced College, and after completing a total of 68 units in course work, among which are transfer requirements and courses in her major, she still boasts a perfect GPA of 4.0.
Her instructors, particularly Cary Yanagi, instructor of computer science, praise her for her impeccable and punctual work, as well as her dependability. Still, she doesn't exclusively focus on herself, but also gives freely of her time by helping and tutoring her classmates in statistics, English, math, and computer science.
She juggles school and tutoring with raising a child as a single mother. Her husband passed away shortly after the birth of her son, leaving her to raise her now 14-year old by herself. Initially, she worked as a bookkeeper in an attorney's office, but then, having realized the importance of a college education, decided to enroll in college as an older returning student. Her goal is to pursue a more challenging career for herself, and more security for her family.
Her immediate objective is obtaining a bachelor's degree in business with concentration in accounting. Eventually, she would like to pursue a career as an upper management accounting officer at a company in the San Joaquin Valley.
Outside of school, she's been busy as a member of various organizations, such as the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Native Daughters of the Golden West, and as the den leader for her son's Cub Scout Pack, in addition to various duties in Boy Scout and the 4-H groups.
It's easy to conclude with her instructor, Cary Yanagi: "This lady is a winner, and we should recognize this."
