Nominating Instructor: Jim Bonstein
Mary Kandola was selected as outstanding student for March 2003. She has been enrolled at Merced College for several semesters.
Ms. Kandola's tenure at Merced College has seen both extremes, going from the very bottom of academic achievement to its very top. For years, she had to fight personal adversity that kept her from developing her true potential, till she finally showed her true colors in her classes as is evidenced by her recent GPA. With Ms. Kandola finally firmly in the driver's seat of her own life and academic achievement, she generates respect by those who surround her: "I think very highly of Mary and her personal strength to better herself, so she in turn can better others", comments her instructor Jim Bonstein.
Ms. Kandola's transformation has translated into concrete goals and activities beyond the college realm. She had arrived at the conclusion that teaching is the appropriate profession that allows her to give back and make a difference in the world. This desire has been firmed up by her volunteer work as a teacher's assistant at an elementary school and as a literacy tutor for the America Reads Program. Yet, Ms. Kandola doesn't call attention to her overcoming of obstacles; as she puts it pleasantly and humbly, she considers herself "just another human being trying to make it in the world." Please congratulate Mary Kandola.
