David Gutierrez

Interests:                       

Future Goals:                 Transfer to a university in order to obtain a degree in
                                        Communications, then seeking out employment in the
                                        news media; explore teaching as a possible career

David Gutierrez was selected as outstanding student for April 2002.  As a honorably discharged veteran of the US Air Force, he retired after 21 years of service and then decided to enroll at Merced College in order to explore new career opportunities.  Considering his situation as a re-entry student, Mr. Gutierrez has made a marvelous transition into academic life as is evidenced by his perfect GPA, and his instructors who describe him as "diligent and hardworking."  His educational goals include obtaining a Master's degree in Communications, and eventually seeking out a position in the news media.

Mr. Gutierrez has no time to set aside for extracurricular activities since he stays extremely busy as father of five children who also assumes all the accompanying tasks, such as cooking and taking care of the home while his wife works and attends school full time.  His example has inspired his own children to obtain better grades and to seek out higher education for the betterment of their lives.  Barring any unexpected turn of events, there is no doubt Mr. Gutierrez shall be the first of his family to obtain a college education.
