ALEKS Sign-Up Instructions

  1. Go to the following website:
  2. Select the free trial option and setup your account
  3. Install the ALEKS plugin for your browser—you must agree to the Terms and Conditions
  4. Select Higher Education as your market
  5. Enter your personal information, along with the following:

    Choose your market: Higher Education: Math
    Select a Course: Intermediate Algebra or Beginning Algebra.
  6. You will then be assigned a login and password - write this down.

    Note: You will have 3 hours of access to the website, to be used within the next 48 hours. You can log out and back in any time using your login and password. Your 3 hours are accumulated only when you are logged in.
  7. Complete the "Answer Editor Tutorial" that shows how to type in responses (the test is not multiple choice).
  8. You will then be given an assessment that contains questions approximately 30 questions similar to those found in the COMPASS Math assessment. 

    Note: If you log out at any time, you will always return to the same spot when you log back in.
  9. Upon completing the assessment, ALEKS will show your pie charts and scores in each area covered by the test.
  10. To interpret your results: Click on a topic from your pie, just to get out of that screen.
  11. Go to 'Report' from the toolbar (this isn't available until after you complete the assessment and go through the pie chart explanation).
  12. You will see a list of all topics you already know, and a list of those you do not know or on which you need to brush up.  You might want to continue to use any remaining free time on ALEKS to brush up on these skills. ALEKS will present you with learning activities and test items to help you learn these skills. Once your trial period expires, you will have the option to subscribe to the service at a cost. You can also use these topics to search for video tutorials on YouTube or on the Khan Academy website ( to help you brush up.
NOTE: This 'free trial' is not meant to be an all-encompassing preparation for the COMPASS Math Assessment.
