December 2018 Student of the Month
One of Tyler Ferro’s most powerful childhood memories was witnessing the coverage of the 9/11 attack in New York. The Turlock native was impressed by the dedication and courage of the first responders and felt that serving would be a high honor. Ferro followed that path, serving his country with pride as a Marine from 2009-2014.
The December Student of the Month was awarded a Post-9/11 G.I. Bill, enabling him to follow his dream of becoming an Occupational Therapist at Merced College.
He began pursuit of that dream in Fall of 2017. One of the major appeals to attending Merced College was the ability to complete all his classes on one campus. Ferro is a member of Phi Theta Kappa with a 4.0 GPA and plans to transfer to CSU Stanislaus for a bachelor’s degree in Psychology.
“Tyler has been an exceptional student in all regards,” said his nominating counselor, Professor Debi Swartz.
His accomplishments are all the more impressive as he’s battled through a traumatic injury suffered in an automobile accident. Swartz said his positivity has never wavered, however.
“He has a zest for life with a willingness and ability to make a profound imprint in every moment,” Swartz said. “He has a world of personal wealth to make a difference in the world.”
Ferro is a single father who is raising his son to exude enthusiasm, with a zeal for life and love of learning that Tyler exhibits as a student here at Merced College.
