CassandraMarch 2020 Student of the Month

Cassandra Aguilar was nominated by Biology Professor Dr. Cary Coburn for March Student of the Month.

Cassandra was born and raised in Merced!  Merced College has been a great place for Cassandra to stretch her wings.  She says that when she began to attend, she didn’t have the confidence to know that she could pursue a degree in science.  Now she does!!  She has found her passion and plans to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a degree in biology on her way to coming a Physician Assistant.

While at Merced she has joined the Pre-Health Club which allowed her the opportunity to participate in the direction of Relay for Life and work towards offering free medical services to those in Peru  who can’t afford medical car.  She is also the ASMC representative for the Pre-Health Club.

She is also a member of Alpha Gamma Sigma Honor Society.  AGS has given her the chance to give back to her community.  From 2018 to 2019, she was the AGS Blood Drive Director.  As a future medical professional, this gave her a chance to network with professionals in the field and gave some incredible experience.

Her GPA is 3.71 and in addition to keeping her grade point average high, she also works as a tutor in the SSTC.

Dr. Coburn states “Cassandra is one of the most self –motivated and independent students that I have worked with and has a passion for learning and achieving her maximum potential.  Cassandra is a very industrious student who takes pride in not just memorizing but fully understanding the nature of her coursework.  Cassandra was a consistent presence at my office hours and was always asking probing and relevant questions.  Cassandra takes her academics very seriously and is focused on her career aspirations but at the same time is a very respectful student who is popular with and works well with her peers.  Cassandra is pursuing a degree in biology with the intent to pursue a career as a physician’s assistant and I think she is intellectually well suited for this admirable goal “
