Merced College ramps up the school spirit with a week of events centered around the students and faculty who represent the blue and gold.
The four-day celebration ‑- known as Blue Devil Days -- cultivates participation from newcomers and returning students alike, with a wide range of activities.
The action gets underway on Tuesday, Oct. 10 with the campus’ clubs occupying booths around the Quad. Students can discover new groups that may interest them or just purchase food from a number of club fundraisers.
Some clubs are even setting up carnival-style games in hopes of attracting new members. Honor society Alpha Gamma Sigma’s ‘Pie a Professor in the Face’ booth, for example, tempts students with its straightforward promise of exacting lighthearted revenge on a beloved faculty member for a small fee.
Associated Students of Merced College’s Brenda Muñoz said they hoped to make this year a more traditional homecoming, with all clubs and organizations bringing their own contributions out in support of the campus.
The spirit keeps going on Wednesday, Oct. 11 with a classic homecoming pep rally in the Quad. The Merced College football team is off to its best start in a couple decades and will host Hartnell at Stadium ’76 on Saturday, Oct. 14. ASMC is trying to recapture some traditional hometown spirit and welcomes everyone to come show their support for Blue Devil football.
Blue Devil Days conclude on Thursday, Oct. 12 with several clubs offering sign-ups near the Student Union, as well as prize giveaways to participating students. There will be face painting, raffles and other activities.
The week culminates with a tailgate barbecue in Lot 5 from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14. That should have everyone in good spirits heading into the football team’s 6 p.m. kickoff with Hartnell.
