Recommended Study Habits

While there is not one study method that works best for every student, there are some general methods that seem to work well for most students.

Effective Studying

  • have one place to study, which is not used for anything else.  Make sure it is well lit and not too comfortable
  • maintain a clean desk and have a straight-back chair
  • schedule time to study and write it in your planner, be sure to allow at least 2 hours of outside study for every hour in class
  • try to do assignments as soon as possible while the material is fresh in your mind
  • get to know your classmates to form a study group and to share notes when someone is absent
  • visit your instructor during office hours or make arrangements
  • go to Study Central, located in the Cafeteria for help
  • set up your study time in your planner just as if it is an appointment
Getting more out of lecture
  • be prepared with adequate sleep (before coming to class, bobbing heads are usually called on)
  • note taking is vital in my classes, a 3 ring binder with paper is more desirable than a notebook since I give handout materials
  • write the date of the notes, don't try to write every detail but instead main points
  • review your notes and fill in gaps after class (not right before the test)
