English 80: Reading Tactics I

 Course Description:

This course is designed to diagnose reading deficiencies and improve basic reading skills, primarily comprehension.  This course is for students who already have a basic understanding of phonics and word analysis but who need additional work in building basic comprehension skills.  This course will emphasize identifying the main idea and supporting details, improve factual recall, recognizing context clues, making inferences, and drawing conclusions.  Vocabulary improvement will also be stressed.

 

Required Texts and Materials:

EffectiveReader: Updated Edition by Henry

Folder for turning in assignments; notebook for journal writing

Photocopies of assignments as required

 

Expected Student Outcomes:

  1. Distinguish main ideas and supporting details in material up to an eighth grade level.
  2. Recognize factual details.
  3. Demonstrate ability to recognize inferences.
  4. Interpret conclusions.
  5. Acquire vocabulary of contextual analysis of various reading materials.
  6. Demonstrate basic reading comprehension at an 8th grade level.
  7. Employ critical thinking skills at a 6th to 8th grade level.
  8. Examine basic pattern of organization, and distinguish between fact and opinion.

 

Grading:

Your grade will be based on the following:

Attendance and Participation:              20%

Assignments:                                       60%

Final Portfolio:                                     20%

 

100-90%: A

89-80%:   B

79-70%:   C

69-60%:   D

59% and below:    F

 

Attendance and Participation: You may have four absences.  There are no excused absences.  Over four absences may result in you being dropped from the course and/or may adversely affect your course grade.

Assignments: Assignments must be completed in a timely fashion.  Assignments turned in late will have points deducted.

 Plagiarizing: The campus policy regarding plagiarism and cheating applies to this course.
