REVIEW FOR MIDTERM:

CHAPTERS 1-5

 

To start preparing for the Midterm, please practice by using the chapter reviews.  Most of the questions will come from chapter reviews and chapter tests.  Here are the topics you will need to master to do well on the Midterm:

 

Ch1

1.        Simplifying square roots    

2.       Translate phrases as an algebraic expressions

3.       Laws of exponents

4.       Recognize whole numbers, rational numbers, and irrational numbers

 

Ch2

  1. Break-even analysis problems
  2. Simplify expressions
  3. Graph inequalities
  4. Go over the satellite problems
  5. Solve equations involving absolute values
  6. Given an equation, solve for a particular variable.

 

Ch3

  1. Graph equations
  2. Graph inequalities (must know how to shade appropriate regions, when do we use dotted lines? and when do we use solid lines?)
  3. How to graph vertical lines and horizontal lines
  4. Find the slope given two points
  5. Given an equation, find the slope and y-intercept and then graph
  6. Determine parallel and perpendicular lines
  7. Determine domain and range of a given graph.  Write answer as an interval notation.

 

Ch4

  1. Graph systems of inequalities
  2. Solve systems of equations using methods of substitution and elimination.
  3. Solve using matrices (3 equations and 3 variables)
  4. Word problem: mixture problem

 

* Go over the formula for calculating determinants

 

Ch5

  1. Long division with polynomials
  2. Recognize monomials, trinomials, and polynomials
  3. Factoring completely trinomials
  4. Synthetic division
  5. Solve by factoring
