CPSC01 - Intro to MIS
Course Description:
This is an entry level course for business majors, students majoring in Computer Science or Management Information Systems, or anyone interested in the fundamentals of computer information systems and gaining an understanding of fundamental programming concepts. Algorithm design, logic diagrams, coding and debugging are introduced using a third generation programming language.
Expected Student Outcomes or Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
- Name and describe the typical digital computer components and their functions.
- Describe the common computer applications and related social and ethical problems/impacts.
- Learn fundamental operation and concepts of word processing, spreadsheet, and/or database software applications.
- Understand the difference between information and knowledge.
- Understand the links among information centers and the access points available through technology and reference sources.
- Understand the basic structure of electronic databases and the strategies used to access them.
- Design and program using discrete problem solving steps
- Analyze and relate the basics of programming to information systems
- Arrange and compare each of the phases of the system life cycle
- Appraise algorithm design and logic diagrams
- Construct and design projects using structured programming techniques
- Differentiate between the various decision techniques
- Examine basic debugging techniques
