Film Analysis COMM-05 Points Possible: 40 points (10 pts. each) Due date: Directions : Please type out each question before answering it. Please be thorough and provide justification for each answer. This should be academic writing and should be proofread before turned in. Don’t forget to take advantage of the Writing Center on campus to get feedback before I evaluate this for a grade. This assignment should be typed. 1. We know that we sometimes organize people or events through the use of stereotypes and that these can be helpful or harmful, accurate or inaccurate. In the beginning of the film Gigi, Nick’s ex, describes him using the stereotype “a man’s man.” Do you think this stereotype is accurate in the beginning of the film? Would Lola, the coffee shop employee, for example, have benefited by knowing that stereotype as a predictor on how to behave towards Nick? Why or why not? 2. We see a glimpse of Nick’s relationship with his mother. Based on the interactions we see of Nick (as a child) with his mother and then how he approaches relationships as an adult (prior to reading women’s minds), what attachment style would you identify for him? Why? [Attachment styles were introduced in Chapter 2, pgs. 47-49] 3. We have studied three actions in the perception process: selection, organization, and interpretation. What did Nick select to see in women before he could read their minds? What did he select to see at the end of the film? Provide examples. 4. Identify Nick’s scripts on how to behave towards women before he could read their minds. Look at his interactions and comments towards women. What patterns obviously emerge as appropriate behaviors in his mind in dealing with women?
