COMM 30: INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

This course is one that is very important to me. My graduate school emphasis was on intercultural communications. I created this course for Merced College because the instructors in our department felt there is a great need for this study in our diverse Merced County.

In this class, you will examine basic concepts of both culture and communication and how they affect one another. We will study the barriers to communicating with people from other culturess, which include egocentrism, prejudice, and lack of awareness. Also discussed are issues such as eye contact, silence, nonverbal communication and how they differ across cultures. We will specifically look at such cultures as Latino, African-American, and Hmong.

This class is offered once every academic year. Currently, this class is being offered in the fall semester.
