My Teaching
Style
I would describe my teaching style as eclectic. Although lecture
is the teaching mode I most often employ, I also use group work
and individual conferencing to address other learning styles. Additionally,
especially for the higher level English courses I teach, I attempt
to create lessons tailored to visual and kinesthetic learners’ styles.
More important
than any teaching mode though is the attitude students bring to
my courses. I expect students to be committed, earnest, and long-suffering.
Writing, and maybe more importantly learning, does not come easily;
keep your nose to the grindstone.
My Background
I was born in Southern
California but my parents dragged me to Northern
California when I was around ten. I occupied space at middle
school and high school
in the central valley and, lacking any other offers, continued my
education, with a new perspective I might add, at Merced
College. Before coming to Merced College, I worked, delivering
meat to the Bay Area, scything
and weeding canals in Merced County, and merchandising and selling
products in Yosemite. Having completed the required course work
at Merced College, I transferred to Humboldt State University and
after graduating there with a Bachelor of Arts in English, finished
my Master of Arts in Composition and Rhetoric at Stanislaus State
University. Before accepting a full-time job at Merced College,
I taught at Modesto Junior College. Since then, I have taken film
courses, read and written about food, and worked on four screenplays.
