Purpose
and Rationale for the Course
The intent of
this course is to further develop writing skills, building on what
students have learned in previous writing courses and moving beyond
that to focus on discipline specific composing modes and styles
particular to each student's discipline.

and Supplies
Required Text: The Bedford Guide
to the Research Process 3rd ed, by Jean Johnson
Supplies--one
10x12 or larger clasp envelope; photocopies of your work as needed;
formatted 3.5" floppy disk; 200 page notebook

Projects
A An
annotated bibliography which focuses on a mutually agreed upon subject.
Students will research and annotate several sources that will be
preceded by an introductory essay.
B An
article length paper which utilizes the sources explored in the
annotated bibliography and adheres to the writing conventions of
the student's respective discipline.
*We
will do three drafts for each paper; the first will be (re)viewed
by at least two classmates, and the second will be evaluated by
me. (Peer review will be graded.) No late papers will be accepted.
C A summary
of an article in which the student will provide the main idea and
few significant details of said article.
D A paper
chase in which students provide bibliographic information for researched
articles. Articles will serve as the sources for both the annotated
bibliography and the article.
E A final
in which students demonstrate their understanding of the Writing
in the Disciplines movement and evaluate its theories and practices.

Attendance
Regular attendance
is expected. I do not distinguish between excused and unexcused
absences. If you miss more than two classes you will be dropped.
If you are more than five minutes late, you will be counted absent.

Professionalism
Students are
expected to act in a collegiate manner. Thus, beepers/pages, cell
phones, headphones/walkmans/discmans and other electronic equipment
will not be tolerated. Make sure these devices are inoperable during
class time. Disruption of class will result in appropriate disciplinary
action. Additionally, children are not allowed in class, for it
is against the law. Finally, regular attendance, participation,
and engagement are instrumental to succeed in this class.
