Paper #1: The Pepsi
Challenge
n
Pepsi-Co wanted to show that most
Americans prefer Pepsi to the other leading brand of soda, Coca-Cola. To
demonstrate this, Pepsi conducted a taste preference test in which participants
took a taste of both Pepsi and Coca-Cola and indicated their preference. Here is
how the study was conducted.
n
Pepsi set up a booth in a large
supermarket with a large banner stating, “Take the Pepsi Challenge”. All around
the booth were bottles and cans of Pepsi. As shoppers walked by, they were asked
to take the Pepsi challenge. Those who decided to take the challenge approached
the booth. They were shown two cups on the table. They were told one of the cups
contained Pepsi and the other, another leading brand of soda. Pepsi was placed
in the cup to the right of the customer and the other leading brand to the left
of the customer. The customers were then instructed to take a taste from the cup
to their right and then to take a taste from the cup to their left. The results
indicated that over half of the customers indicated a preference for Pepsi.
