TEACHING AND LEARNING EDITION by John Faragher,  4th edition, combined.

GETTING STARTED and LOGGING IN:

If you are already enrolled, go to the Merced College Portal.  You can go through www.mccd.edu   or click the link/picture on this page.  You will be prompted to put in your user name and password. Your user name is your firstname.lastname   Your password is your 6 digit birthday.  If you have any difficulties, follow the instructions under "get login help."  If you still run into further trouble, you can access the student help desk   or call 381-6565.

.Once in the portal, you can access a variety of tools such as the library, webadvisor, your student email, and your WebCT/online class(es).  Under student online tools, click WebCT and you will find your courses listed.  Click the link to your course and you are in.   You need to access your course by January 25th.  If you fail to complete the first assignment or notify me of your delay, I will assume you do not wish to continue with the course and you will be locked out/dropped.

ADDS:

It takes a few days to process adds.  To help, take your add-slip to admissions as soon as possible.  Once you are enrolled, you can expect access to the course in about 2 days.  Temporarily, you may access the course www.mccd.edu    Click online tools at the bottom of the page.  Then select the WebCT link.  Use the WebCt ID and password duffy (put in both boxes.)  This will allow you to view the material, but not submit any assignments.

 TO CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD:

At the top of “myWebCT” page, click “Password Settings”.  You will be asked to enter you old password (6digit bb) and a new password along with a hint.  Be sure to write your password down, as I can not retrieve it for you.  Scroll down the page and enter your email address also, then select “update”.  You will then click “Return to myWebCT”.

THE COURSE:

To get into the course click on the appropriate highlighted course on your myWebCT page.  This will take you to the course homepage that has a list of icons.

  1. Browser, Plugins, etc. Make sure you have the proper hardware for the course.  If you run into any download problems, this will be the first place you start.

  1. CALENDAR:  This is very important as it reminds you what is due and when.  You can view by week or month. Click on the date for expanded view.

  1. SYLLABUS:  You should read this first so that you know what is required to be successful in the course.  Refer back to it as necessary.

  1. The course is organized by chapter.  Each chapter has Objectives, Key Terms, and

other various study tools.  You will also find a link to the discussion question, quiz, and web destination/New York Times assignment if due.  When you click the discussion icon, it will take you to a list of the chapters.  Select the corresponding chapter.  Be sure that Threaded is highlighted so you can see the author (me).  Click the highlighted title.  This is where you will select “reply privately” and post your answer.  Your answer will be emailed to me so you will  not see it posted.  I will send individual replies to every other discussion.  But I will post examples of student answers for your review after I have graded them.  I do not accept attachments, so copy and paste if you are using Word.

  1. All units will also have the “Quiz” option.  You will be taken to list of quizzes for the course.  Select which one you want to take.  You will be reminded that you can only take the quiz once and the length of time available.

      f.    Exams are listed on the calendar but are accessed through the Quiz link.
Undoubtedly you will see them listed when you take your quizzes.

      g.    Student Learning Resources: Access from homepage.  This contains your grades,
the companion website (important) and the study guides for the exams.  The
companion website is where you will find chapters listed with web destinations,
biographies, and the New York Times.  See the calendar for due dates and the
             discussion headings for specific instructions.

*****IMPORTANT****

4.      If you do not complete the first assignment by the first due date, I will assume that you are not staying in the course.  This class is very popular and many others will be waiting to take your “seat” if you do not choose to stay.  Your response or an email will let me know if you are having any access problems.

5.  Remember, the best way to get familiar with the course is to take a look around.  If
you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to email me.  Please understand that in
dealing with computers and systems, some servers or email may not be available at
any given time. (but let’s hope we have smooth sailing the entire semester.)  We must
be patient.  If you experience any problems at all, you can always call my voice-mail
(384-6355) or on campus email: steeley.j@mccd.edu.  Otherwise, once you are in the
course, all email should be sent within the WebCt course. You will find my name
      listed after you select BROWSE.
