HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS Corwin Fall 2008
The homework assignments are quite extensive. You should aim to complete as many of these assignments as you can. Experience has shown that the more homework problems that YOU can work correctly, the better your grade will be in the course. If you need help on these assignments, your instructor is very willing to help. You are encouraged to see your instructor during office hours for help on assignments. During the course of the semester there will be many Chapter Quizzes (either in class or take home). The basis of these quizzes will be the assigned homework. The quiz problems will be collected and graded for completeness, accuracy and neatness. YOU MUST SHOW YOUR WORK, INCLUDING UNITS, TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE QUESTION.

Chemistry 2A
Fall 2008
Course Description:
This
is an introduction to the general principles of inorganic chemistry, atomic and
molecular structure, states of matter, solutions, and radioactivity.
The class is designed for students majoring in liberal studies, nursing,
or agriculture.
Lecture:
The purpose of our lecture is to present new material; clarify the
concepts presented in the text; and to answer questions that you may have.
It is expected that you will come to lecture having read the chapter and
having attempted at least some of the homework problems.
If you are having difficulties with a homework problem feel free to ask
for our assistance. We welcome any
and all questions concerning the course content.
Our goal is to establish an atmosphere in lecture that is conducive to
students feeling comfortable in asking questions.
Remember lecture is your chance to ask questions that clarify the
concepts being covered.
Tests/Quizzes:
There
will be no make-up for any
test or quiz that is missed, unless
you have made prior arrangements
with the instructor. The quizzes
will be unannounced, given approximately once a week and will be similar to the
homework or lecture examples. Some
quizzes may be given on-line. You
may use the Math Lab to complete the on-line quizzes.
Attendance:
We expect that you will attend all of our lectures.
Experience has shown that those that attend lectures and participate in
class discussions have a much better chance of succeeding in the class.
If you must be absent, you are still responsible for the material covered
in lecture. Remember you must be
present to take the quiz.
Homework:
The homework is assigned to give you experience working problems similar
to those that will be on the quizzes and tests.
The more homework problems that
you can successfully complete the better you should do on the test.
Be sure to set up and work each problem.
Do not take short cuts or leave out steps.
You are practicing for the quizzes and tests.
You will need to set-up each problem with the appropriate units shown.
Labs:
You are responsible for all of the lab assignments.
If you miss your lab at its regularly scheduled time you
must make-up that lab
during the week it is scheduled.
If necessary, you may have to go to another Chem 2A lab and ask the instructor
for permission to make-up the lab.
The instructor must give their permission and there must be space for you to
work safely. Make sure that the lab
instructor initials and dates your lab manual pages.
No missed lab work will be accepted without the initials and date. Lab
reports turned in late may be assessed a late penalty.
Each lab report is expected to reflect the student’s own work.
Copying other students work is a violation of our Academic Honesty
Policy.
Office
Hours:
We have indicated on the syllabus when our official office hour(s) will
occur. Students may also
schedule an appointment at other times.
We like to use office hours as a time during which we can meet one-on-one
with students. This is an excellent
time for you to get personal help from us.
If you are unable to come during our posted office hours then see us to
schedule another time that we can meet.
We are also available to answer questions after lab has started.
If you come in a half-hour after the lab has started, we will try to make
time to talk with you.
Electronic Devices:
Please be courteous to your fellow students.
All cell phones, pagers, MP3 players, etc., must be turned off during
lecture and lab. If you must leave
your cell phone/pager on for emergency reasons, then set them to the silent mode
so you won’t disturb the class. If
you receive a call during lecture,
quietly go outside to complete your call.
Academic Honesty:
We
expect each student to submit only the work that they have actually performed.
Our policy for students that cheat is very simple.
If you are caught cheating on a test, a quiz, or a lab report, you will
receive a zero for that assignment and the assignment in question will be used
in determining your grade. We may
also choose to decrease your final grade by one letter grade.
If there is a second instance of cheating, the student will receive an F
for the semester and will be reported to the Administration for appropriate
additional disciplining.
Grades:
Your grade in the course will be based on the total number of points that you
accumulate during the semester. The
points will be assigned as follows: (Students must earn a
minimum of 55%
in lab in order to pass the course)
