CalWORKs

Welcome to the home page for the Merced College CalWORKs Program. This is your starting point to explore the services offered at Merced College for students that are part of the CalWORKs program.

CalWORKs

Introduction of CalWORKs
Upon passage of Assembly Bill (AB) 1542 in 1997 and the creation of the California Work Opportunities and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program, the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office initiated a program to provide supportive services to Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) recipients enrolled in community colleges.

Colleges submitted plans to the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office in November 1997 outlining their proposed activities and services, jointly developed lists of approved educational programs for students in cooperation with county partners, and began implementation of services in late Fall 1997.

Who is eligible for the program?

  • Any student enrolled at Merced College
  • Receiving TANF benefits
  • Making academic progress
