WHAT A SEASON !!! THE TRADITION CONTINUES
The Lady Blue Devils finished the 2011 season with a 30 - 3 record which is the second best in the school’s history and second best in the state. They also finished the season as league champs and got a Nor-Cal title as well. The Lady Devils were one of only four teams to qualify for the State Tourney. This is the 11th time in 15 years that the Ladies have been to the State Tournament.
Once again the Lady Blue Devils are considered one of the best and most successful community college programs in the state. The Devils have averaged over 22 wins a season in over a 15 year period.
The season was highlighted with winning four tournaments: West Valley, Long Beach, Big 8- Coast Conference and Coast Conference Tournaments. The Devils finished with a 3-1 record at the Ventura Tournament to take second place.
The Lady Devils 30 wins were achieved by going undefeated in league play, winning tournaments and beating every opponent they faced except three. Other highlights were beating area teams such as Modesto, Fresno, Sierra and Delta.
Because of the great season, the lady Devils received many rewards. Poni McGee (91 goals, 46 assists, 52 steals) was named Coast Conference MVP and Nor-Cal MVP. Mallory Howard (44 goals, 59 assists, 106 steals) was named 1st Team Coast Conference, 1st Team Nor-Cal and Coast Conference Tourney MVP. Katie Elam (50 goals, 55 assists, 63 steals) was selected 1st Team Coast Conference, 1st Team Nor-Cal and Coast Conference Tourney 1st Team
Stevie Wills (41 goals, 32 assists, 46 steals) and Vanessa Morales (49 goals, 29 assists, 64 steals) were selected to the Coast Conference second team and Wills was named to the Nor Cal second team.
Halie Pruneda (23 goals, 27 assists, 27 steals) was honorable mention Coast Conference and scored the winning goal to win the Nor-Cal title in sudden death over DVC.
Stevie Wills were named and selected on the 2011 Community College All American Team. Four All Americans on this year’s team has given the Merced College Water Polo Program a total of 50 All Americans over a period of 15 years. Katie Elam was also named to the All State Tournament Team.
"We had a great season with a lot of individual awards and recognition. This was also made possible because of our bench players. We won as a team! Every player on this year’s team got better and learned more about the game."
