Merced College String Orchestra Announces Holiday Concert

November 14, 2006

The first-ever concert for the Merced College String Orchestra is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. in the Merced College Theater. The String Orchestra is new to Merced College but it promises to be a successful venture for the 35 members who make up the college-community orchestra.

According to orchestra director Tim Johnson, the String Orchestra is the result of many years of community advocacy.

“We’ve put the string orchestra together because we knew our local community would support it,” Johnson said. “And, there are many fine string musicians who live here and who have wanted to organize such an orchestra to showcase their talents and to promote string instruments.”

Johnson is no stranger to string instruments. He plays violin in the Fresno Symphony but is well-known as the fiddler in the popular cowboy band The Sons of the San Joaquin. Johnson earned his master’s degree in music education from Bob Jones University and is currently in his doctoral studies through Boston University.

“This really fulfills a long-time need to have a local orchestra that features strings,” he said.
Johnson currently teaches string instruments at Merced College. The orchestra features intermediate and advanced players. “We want to begin to perform publicly to earn funds to purchase a string music library. As we grow, our orchestra will rely on performances to continue to build our instructional program.”

The first half of the concert will feature classical string compositions from the 1600s through the Romantic and Baroque periods. The second half of the concert will focus on contemporary pops and holiday classics.

Tickets are $8 for students and seniors and $10 at the door. They are available at the Merced College Theater Box Office, the Merced College Community Services office, and in the following community locations: Aloha Floral at the Merced Mall, Applewood Gifts on 18th Street, and at the Seraphim Café in Atwater.
