Accolades For Merced College Radiography Program Students

January 23, 2006

Christina Boer, a Merced College Radiography intern student, won second place in the “Student” category of the 2005 RT Image Writer’s Competition. Her article, titled Learning Made Easy, is set for publication in the April 2006 issue of the national magazine. Boer also received an Award of Merit by the Merced College Radiography Program for her submission of the article.

In her article, Boer identified twelve teaching approaches by clinical instructors that seemed to work best in her clinical learning experience. She concluded her article by stressing that “when these teaching strategies are employed by clinical instructors, student technologists can discover short cuts to learning and tips to reinforce what they need to know.” She credits every technologist along her path of discovery for helping her make sense of her journey into the field of Radiography.

Merced College’s Radiography Program also recently graduated sixteen students from its 29-month program. Once a student completes the Radiography Program, the student must successfully pass the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) examination in order to practice in their profession. Program Director Judy Rose announced that all 16 students passed. This brings the Radiography Program’s five year pass rate to 100%, which means that the last five classes passed this examination the first time around.

“What makes this class exceptional is that the average class score for this group of students was 91.06%,” said Rose. “The five year national and state averages for this examination come in around 83.4% – 84.6%, so these students have much to be proud of. They worked hard and deserve to be recognized for their efforts.”

The Radiography Program is affiliated with twelve major hospitals and imaging centers serving the Central San Joaquin Valley from Madera to Tracy, Los Banos to Sonora and in between. It is approved by the California Department of Health Services and accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
