Learn About Financial Aid with Merced College Workshop

February 10, 2004

Merced College is hosting a free financial aid workshop for students and parents on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Tri-College Center Building 1 Board Room. Staff from the College's Financial Aid Office will provide help in completing the federal financial aid packet for the 2004-2005 academic year.

"Students and parents should bring their 2003 income information to the workshop," said Financial Aid counselor Judy Leufgen, noting that participants can estimate their income if they don't have exact figures. Students and parents may bring in W-2 forms or any other relevant 2003 income information.

The personalized assistance College staff will be providing is invaluable to students wishing to attend college in the fall. According to the Central Valley Higher Education Consortium, only 28 percent of students in the local region who qualify for Cal Grants submit an application. This means many local students are missing an opportunity to receive money to help pay for college.

The workshop is part of a series of "Cash for College" workshops designed to help students and parents apply for federal financial aid, including Cal Grant awards. Local students who attend the workshop and who submit a completed evaluation form will automatically be entered into a drawing to win a $1,000 scholarship from the James Irvine Foundation.

The workshop is sponsored by the Merced County Cal-SOAP program and the Merced College Financial Aid Office. For more information, call 384-6031 or 384-6038.
