Golf Tournament Raises Funds For Scholarships

March 20, 2003

With the impending budget cuts and proposed student fee increases presently targeted toward the community college system, fund-raising efforts to provide scholarships to deserving students has become even more imperative for the Merced College Foundation.

"Although this is an early announcement, we want the community to mark their calendars now for the Foundation's annual Friends and Alumni Golf Tournament set for Friday, Sept. 12 at Stevinson Ranch," said Robin Shepard, director of Institutional Advancement. Proceeds from this year's tournament will provide scholarships for deserving students at Merced College.

"We are going to have a great tournament," said Dennis Gillen, tournament chairman. "Stevinson Ranch is one the premier golf courses in the state. We are fortunate to be able to have our tournament there."

Last year's tournament was "a resounding success," Gillen said. "It was the first year that we held the tournament at Stevinson Ranch and everyone was so pleased with the facility and the professional manner in which the tournament was conducted."

Funds from last year's tournament have allowed the Foundation to offer about $5,000 in additional scholarships to students for the coming academic year.

Stevinson Ranch is located at 2700 N. Van Clief Road in Stevinson. It was named one of the top 25 courses in California and has earned 4 stars from "Golf Digest" magazine.

Cost is $100 per player or $400 per foursome. The cost includes green fees, golf carts, practice balls, tee prizes, and a chuckwagon barbecue dinner. Business may support the tournament by becoming a hole sponsor for $100.
