February 3, 2003 Former Merced College student Bryan Tassey received the prestigious “Superstar Award” from the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) during the annual Student Career Days held at Illinois Central College last March. Tassey, a senior majoring in Environmental Horticultural Science at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, participated with his team in events ranging from sales presentations to landscape and irrigation design problems, to plant, turf and pest identification. 52 colleges and universities from across the nation competed during the two-day event, with a total of nearly 700 student participants. With a partial team, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo placed first in two of the 21 events; Sales Presentation and Weed and Turf Identification. With the temperature well below what the California team is accustomed to, Cal Poly placed 15th out of 52 teams, with the high individual “Superstar Award” being achieved by Tassey. Along with the award, Tassey received a $1500 scholarship from the ALCA Scholarship Foundation. Tassey, and his partner in several events, Cielo Sichi, placed second in the Landscape Maintenance Equipment Operation Event Tassey is a graduate
of Atwater High School and Merced College. He is the son of Jeff Tassey,
a counselor and instructor at Merced College, and Carolyn Tassey, a library
media teacher at Chenoweth School.
