Although an AA degree in photography is available, not everyone pursues the degree. Some students depart when they are ready to test their photographic skills in the outside world. What follows is a partial list and samples of work from those who have graduated from Merced College or transferred to a four-year institution.
San Francisco University - 1998
Jack Bland attended Merced College in 1997-98. In 1998 he moved to San Francisco where he graduated with a degree in photojournalism from San Francisco State University. He now works for the Merced Sun-Star as a photographer.

California State University, Stanislaus - 2000
Jamie Guerra graduated from MC as the outstanding photo major of 2000. He is an alumnus of CSU Stanislaus.
California State University, Fresno - 1993
Gwartney earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Photojournalism from California State University Fresno in 1993 and an Associate in Arts degree from Merced Community College in 1991. At Merced College Gwartney was editor of the school newspaper and while at Fresno State he was involved in the university newspaper as a full time photographer. Working his way up through the ranks in the newspaper industry, he started out as a photo lab technician for a weekly Merced newspaper. Gwartney has traveled as a photojournalist throughout the country for the Associated Press, various newspapers and freelanced for nationally circulated magazines. His work has appeared in publications in much of the Western United States.
Gwartney is very active in the photographic industry and his community and has served on the executive board of the Chowchilla Chamber of Commerce as President. He has juried and critiqued several art shows, exhibits and competitions and is an active member in PPA (Professional Photographers Association), WPPI (Wedding and Portrait Photographers International) and NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals).
Brooks Institute of Photography, Santa Barbara - 1981
Robert Keller graduated from Merced College in 1981 with an AA in photography and transferred to Brooks Institute shortly thereafter. He graduated from Brooks in 1984 with a specialization in industrial photography. From 1984 to 2001 he worked in Los Angeles as a freelance photographer. Bob recently moved back to the San Joaquin Valley.
Brooks Institute of Photography, Santa Barbara - 1993
Merced native Greg Voight earned his photography degree from Merced College in 1993 and transferred to Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara. After graduating from Brooks with honors, Voight worked as a commercial photographer in Southern California until hired by Brooks Institute to teach in 2000. He is a member of the Los Angeles chapter of Advertising Photographers' of America. His stock images are carried by International Stock, Inc. of New York.
