Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What are the prerequisites for Biotechnology I, the first course offering?
A: Prerequisites to enter Biotechnology I include Biology (Bio 1 or Bio 4), Chemistry (Chem 2A/2B or 1A/1B), and Genetics (Genetics may be taken concurrently). Entrance into subsequent courses requires successful completion of the prior course.

Q: How long will it take to complete the program offerings?
A: Students can complete the program in as few as four semesters.

Q: What other courses should I take while enrolled in the Biotechnology program?
A: Students should see a counselor to determine other courses to take while enrolled in the Biotechnology program.

Q: What are my options upon successful completion of the Biotechnology program?
A: You could find employment and career fields such as: Biotechnology, DNA Forensics, Chemical Biotechnology, Agriculture Biotechnology, and Bioinformatics, or you could transfer to a four-year institution.

Q: What are the starting salaries of individuals with a Biotechnology background?
A: Starting salaries vary by employer and regionally, however, it is not uncommon for entry-level technicians to start at hourly wages of $17/hour or monthly salaries of $35,000.

Q: Are jobs available in or out of our local area?
A: Biotechnology is the fastest-growing industry in California, which is home to 50% of the nation's biotechnology companies. The number of Californians employed in biotechnology is expected to grow to more than 100,000 over the next several years. Many of the jobs are within 120 miles of Merced. With the opening of UC Merced, more positions should be available locally.
